The Adelaide Peninsula ( English Adelaide Peninsula , Inuktitut Illuiliq ) is a barely inhabited peninsula in the center of the Canadian territory of Nunavut .
It is connected to the mainland via the McCrary Isthmus . It is bounded in the east by the Chantrey Inlet and the Rasmussen Basin , in the northeast by the Simpson Strait , in the northwest by the Queen Maud Gulf and in the southwest by the Sherman Inlet and the Sherman Basin , an inland bay the size of Lake Constance . The Adelaide Peninsula is separated from the Klutschak Peninsula by the narrow Sherman Inlet and from King William Island by the Simpson Strait . It is named after Queen Adelheid von Sachsen-Meiningen , the wife of King Wilhelm IV of Great Britain.
On Simpson Strait is Starvation Cove , the southernmost point that was verifiably reached in 1848 by members of the Franklin Expedition on their march south.
