history

In the 1980s, the Victorian Football League (VFL) began expanding to areas outside of Victoria . This was evident in the relocation of South Melbourne Football Club to New South Wales in 1982 and expansion into Western Australia and Queensland in the form of the West Coast Eagles and Brisbane Bears in 1987. The South Australian National Football League (SANFL) initially spoke out against one of their teams joining the VFL. In the 1990 season, the VFL was renamed the Australian Football League (AFL) and in 1991 the newly formed Adelaide Football Club played in this league for the first time. After a few years of mediocrity, the Crows became a top team towards the end of the decade. In 1997 they made their first entry into the Grand Final , surprisingly defeating the favored St Kilda Saints with 125: 94 and winning their first championship title. A year later Adelaide defended the title with a convincing 105-70 against the North Melbourne Kangaroos . After that, the Crows did not reach a Grand Final for almost two decades , but won the McClelland Trophy as the best team of the regular season in 2005 . Most of the time, however, the team found themselves in the middle of the table. An exception was the 2012 season, in which Adelaide took second place in the final table and then failed to the Hawthorn Hawks in the Preliminary Final . In 2017 they returned to the top team by winning the second McClelland Trophy, but in the Grand Final the Richmond Tigers were surprisingly clearly defeated with 60: 108.

Fans

Adelaide Football Club has a very large fan base. In 2006 the Crows were the first AFL team to break the 50,000 member mark, and in 2014 the club had the best average in the league with an average of around 48,000 spectators per game. Local rivals Port Adelaide Power are considered a sporting archenemy .
