Adele Filene

Adele Filene (Adelheid Bleichröder) (born June 14, 1909 in Berlin ; † August 8, 2010 in Stamford , USA) was a German fashion designer of Jewish origin.

Life

Adele Filene's great-grandfather was Samuel Bleichröder , the founder of the S. Bleichröder banking house . Her father was the doctor Fritz Bleichröder .

At the age of six, Adele Filene attended a private school and later the Lyceum in Görschstrasse (later Carl-von-Ossietzky-Gymnasium ) in Berlin. She was an apprentice tailor and spent a year at an arts and crafts school in Vienna. She designed patterns for a fashion magazine for the Ullstein publishing house . She married in 1930 and emigrated with her husband in 1936, initially without her twins, to London , England. In 1951 the marriage was divorced; In 1968 she married again and moved to live with her husband in New York , USA. Filene was a major member of the Women's City Club of New York ; u. a. she was one of ten Honorary Directors there .

Adele Filene designed in particular sportswear and handbags. In addition, she published various specialist articles on the subject of fashion design . In 1973 she was one of the six founding members of the Costume Society of America (CSA) . From 1973 to 1979 she was the treasurer of the company. The CSA has been awarding her the Adele Filene Student Presenter Grant in her honor since 1996 .
