Adiyamankottai - Chennaraya Perumal Temple |
Adiyamankottai or Adhiyaman Kottam is a larger village with around 10,000 inhabitants in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . There are several temples near and in the village.
location
Adiyamankottai is located approx. 8 km (driving distance) southwest of Dharmapuri or approx. 60 km north of Salem at an altitude of approx. 480 m above sea level. d. M. The climate is mostly warm; Rain falls mainly during the monsoon months May to November.
population
The vast majority of the almost exclusively Tamil- speaking residents of the place are Hindus ; other religions hardly play a role in the rural regions of India. The male population is about 8% higher than the female.
economy
Agriculture and, to a lesser extent, cattle breeding (cows, chickens) form the livelihood of the population. Small traders, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds have also settled in the village.
history
How far back the history of the place goes is unclear; around 100 AD, Adiyamankottai was a fortress town of the regional ruler Adhiyaman Neduman Anji , but there are hardly any traces of the former fort. The Perumal temple is most likely from the Chola epoch (11th / 12th centuries); however, it was expanded in the Vijayanagar period (14th / 15th centuries).
Attractions
The temple dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu ( Perumal ) consists of a large, but architecturally rather insignificant vestibule ( mandapa ) and the cella ( garbhagriha ) with a stepped tower structure ( vimana ) in the Dravida style . The tower structure shows pseudo-architecture and figures (including erotic representations); However, it does not end in the "umbrella dome" typical of medieval architecture in South India, but in a kind of bellied hood . Remnants of painting have been preserved inside the temple.
In front of the main temple there are several pillars of honor on profiled pedestals and a shrine temple.
