Adnan Patschachi (2010)

Adnan Pachachi ( Arabic عدنان باجاجي; * May 14, 1923 in Baghdad ; † November 17, 2019 in Dubai ) was an Iraqi politician and diplomat .

Life

Pachachi came from a Sunni family of well-known politicians and diplomats, one of the 40 or so families that dominated Iraq economically and politically before 1958. His father Muzahim el Patchachi , his father-in-law and his uncle Hamdi al-Patchachi were prime ministers during the Iraqi monarchy. Adnan himself was foreign minister of the republic in the cabinet of the Shiite general Naji Talib from 1965 to 1967 . He had previously represented his country as ambassador to the United Nations since 1959 ; he exercised this function again from 1967 to 1969.

After the Ba'ath Party came to power under Saddam Hussein , he went into exile in Abu Dhabi . There he was appointed foreign policy advisor and minister in 1971 and promoted the recognition of the United Arab Emirates by the UN .

Pachachi saw himself as an Arab nationalist and criticized the Middle East policy of the USA as Zionist and in particular the US intervention in Iraq. He tried to organize last minute exile for Saddam Hussein in the United Arab Emirates and accused the United States of war crimes. He also criticized the award of the construction project for the reconstruction of Iraq to the Bechtel Corporation and accused the USA of promoting the sectarian division of political power between Shiites and Sunnis.

In 2003/04, Pachachi led the drafting of the transitional constitution. At the end of May 2004, he was reportedly nominated by the United States in its candidacy for President of Iraq ; however, he denied this rumor, which harmed him. In the election on January 30, 2005, he received only 12,728 votes.

Pachachi was proposed as president by the UN special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi after lengthy explorations and, above all, enjoyed the confidence of the American State Department. He declined the office, however, mainly because it was representative in nature and because it was to be assumed that the 25-member government council , like the US, would prefer Ghazi al-Yawar .
