Adolf Merz

Adolf Merz (born August 2, 1903 in Bobenheim am Rhein , † October 2, 1987 in Frankenthal ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Life

After graduating from elementary school, Merz initially worked as a laborer. Following private training, he worked as a commercial clerk in the pump and machine industry, then as a foreign correspondent. In the 1920s, he switched to a commercial clerk at a large chemical company in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . In 1921 he joined the SPD and the union. After the National Socialists came to power , he was arrested several times and placed under police supervision.

After the Second World War, Merz was again politically active, participated in the re-establishment of the SPD and was elected chairman of the SPD local association in Bobenheim in 1948. He had been a member of the Bobenheim municipal council since 1946 and served there as honorary mayor from 1960 until the municipal reorganization in 1969. In the state elections in 1951 , he was elected for the first time as a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament, to which he belonged until 1967. He was always drawn into parliament via the SPD's state list. From 1951 to 1955 he was a member of the Petitions Committee, from 1951 to 1963 a member of the Economic and Recovery Committee and from 1963 to 1967 a member of the Economic and Transport Committee.

Awards and honors

In 1965 the Federal President awarded him the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Adolf-Merz-Straße in Bobenheim-Roxheim was named in his honor.
