Adolfo Winternitz

Adolfo Cristobal Winternitz , b. Adolf Gustav Winternitz Wurmser (born October 20, 1906 in Vienna , † June 17, 1993 in Lima ) was a Peruvian artist of Austrian descent (academic painter , sculptor and graphic artist ) who emigrated to Lima ( Perú ) in 1939 . He was the founder of the Academia de Arte Católico in Lima. He has four children.

Life

Adolfo Winternitz was accepted at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna at the age of 15 . From 1921 to 1929 he studied painting, sculpture and graphics with Karl Sterrer . After his marriage to Hannah Pollak (1905–1986) in 1931, the family moved to Florence and later to Rome . In 1938 he and his family converted to Catholicism. With church support, they managed to emigrate to Lima (Peru) during the fascist dictatorship. As early as 1940 he founded the Academia de Arte Católico there , which he also directed. In 1942 he received the Peruvian citizenship. In 1947 the Academia de Arte Católico was incorporated into the Catholic University in Lima. In 1952 Adolfo Winternitz was appointed director of the Escuela de Artes Plásticas at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP). In 1981 the former Academia de Arte Católico was converted into the Faculty of Arts. From 1984 he was dean of the faculty where his grandson Michael Perko Winternitz also teaches painting . Winternitz was a founding member of the SIAC (Société Internationale des Artistes Chrétiens) established in 1950 .

Winternitz developed from New Objectivity to abstract painting . In addition to portraits and landscapes, he later increasingly took up religious themes.
