Adolph Friedrich Witzel (born June 14, 1847 in Langensalza , Province of Saxony , Kingdom of Prussia , † June 12, 1906 in Bonn ) was a German dentist.

Life

Adolph Witzel was born as the first son of a family of eleven to a barber and healing assistant and became aware of the importance of university education at an early stage. After studying at the University of Berlin (1866–1868), as a resident dentist in Essen , he also devoted himself to scientific studies, in particular the introduction of Lister 's antisepsis in the treatment of pulp diseases. From 1882 he also studied at the University of Heidelberg and was awarded a Dr. med. PhD. After his habilitation in 1892 at the University of Jena , he taught dentistry as a private lecturer , became the first director of the Dental Institute in 1894 and was appointed associate professor of dentistry in 1896. The focus of his studies was the histology and microscopic anatomy of the teeth. He is considered a co-founder of scientific dentistry, especially endodontics . In 1899 he broke off his teaching activities for health reasons and after his recovery worked as a dentist in Bonn and in further training for a few years.

Since April 22, 1903, Witzel was a member of the Freemason Lodge Friedrich Wilhelm zum Eiserner Kreuz, which was re-established in Bonn in 1857 .

His younger brothers also took up the profession of medicine: Privy Councilor Prof. Dr. Oskar Witzel (1856–1925, surgeon in Düsseldorf), Karl Witzel (1859–1916, dentist in Dortmund), Anton Witzel (1861–1933, dentist in Wiesbaden) and Prof. Dr. Julius Witzel (1863–1914, dentist at the University of Marburg ).
