life and work

Hatzfeld, who came from a Protestant pastor family, went through the Massin institution, the Ecole Normale, passed the Agrégation and completed his habilitation in Paris in 1850 with the two Thèses De la Politique dans ses rapports avec la morale. Essai on "la République" de Plato and De Parmenide Platonis disputatio academica . He was then tutor to the publisher Louis Hachette and collaborator on the Latin-French, French-Latin dictionary of Louis-Marie Quicherat. In 1855 he became a teacher of foreign-language literatures in Grenoble , and in 1860 he was a rhetoric teacher at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris.

In 1871 he began with Arsène Darmesteter , who took over the historical part, the great project of his life, the Dictionnaire général de la langue française du commencement du XVIIIe siècle jusqu'à nos jours, précédé d'un traité de la formation de la langue in 2 Volumes, which began to appear in 1890 and was ready in 1900 after Antoine Thomas (1857–1935) stood in for Darmesteter, who died in 1888. This work, praised by experts as the first modern dictionary, but never popular with a broader educated public, remained in its category without a successor until the publication of Petit Robert in 1967.
