biography

family

Adolphe Stoclet was the son of Victor Stoclet (1843–1904) and his wife Anne Kitty nee. Caspers (1842-1908). He was married to Suzanne Stevens (1874-1960). They had two sons (Jacques and René) and a daughter (Raymonde, the future wife of Lucien Feron). The son Jacques (1903–1961) married Anny Geerts (1907–2002) and had four daughters: Catherine, Dominique, Aude and Nèle (1944–2012).

Act

Adolphe Stoclet was sent to Vienna as the son of a banking family, among other things to pursue a major railway project. In this function, Stoclet also sat on the supervisory board of the Austro-Belgian Railway Company , which had a subsidiary in Austria with the Vienna-Aspang Railway . During this stay in Vienna, Stoclet got to know the architect Josef Hoffmann and wanted to have a house built by him. The death of his father forced Stoclet to return to Belgium. There he took over the management of Société générale de Belgique , a large conglomerate with around 40 companies (banks, arms factories, mines in the Belgian Congo, etc.). Between 1905 and 1911, Adolphe Stoclet had Hoffmann and the Wiener Werkstätten built the later famous Palais Stoclet in Brussels with the Stoclet frieze designed by Gustav Klimt . The palace is the main work of Hoffmann and is in the list of UNESCO - World Heritage listed.

characterization

Contemporaries described Adolphe Stoclet as a charming but somewhat pompous personality with an impressive "beard à la Assurbanipal ", who fitted perfectly into the overall work of art in his house. Madame Suzanne Stoclet, a daughter of the Belgian art historian Arthur Stevens and niece of the painter Alfred Stevens , also made sure that even the flowers in the vases of the Palais Stoclet were always matched to the respective color of the tie of the host.
