The kk privileged Eisenbahn Wien-Aspang , abbreviated EWA , was a railway company in Austria , named after the Austrian capital - where the company was also based - and the market town of Aspang in Lower Austria . The private railway , which was constituted as a stock corporation , was majority owned by the Belgian Société Belge des chemins de fer and existed from 1880 to 1941.

history

For its activities in Austria, the Société Belge des chemins de fer owned the Erste Österreichische Schiffahrts-Canal-Actiengesellschaft , a subsidiary that operated the Wiener Neustädter Canal . This was converted into the Austro-Belgian Railway Company on August 23, 1878 , which in turn founded the Vienna-Aspang Railway on January 17, 1880 and finally began operating on August 7, 1881. In addition to its own routes, the company also operated on behalf of the Schneebergbahn -Aktiengesellschaft (SchBB) from January 1, 1899 . The company was therefore responsible for the following routes:

route length
Vienna Aspangbahnhof – Felixdorf 42.52 kilometers
Wiener Neustadt – Aspang 33.93 kilometers
Connecting track Vienna Aspangbahnhof – Vienna connecting line 00.27 kilometers
Connecting track to the Donauländebahn 00.77 kilometers
Vienna Central Cemetery - Klein Schwechat 03.87 kilometers
Wiener Neustadt Schneebergbahnhof – Puchberg am Schneeberg , on behalf of SchBB 28.01 kilometers
Puchberg am Schneeberg – Hochschneeberg , on behalf of SchBB 09.81 kilometers
Bad Fischau – Wöllersdorf , on behalf of the SchBB 05.00 kilometers
Bad Fischau connecting track , on behalf of SchBB 00.23 kilometers
Sollenau Fireworks Institute , on behalf of the SchBB 08.62 kilometers

On the 9.53-kilometer connection between Felixdorf and Wiener Neustadt , the company also used the previously existing infrastructure of the Südbahn-Gesellschaft in Péage operation, that is, they traveled on the Austrian Südbahn .

After the First World War , the Vienna-Aspang railway also ran into financial difficulties from 1919 onwards due to the enormous increase in operating costs. In 1923 their share capital was 9.3 million crowns , the priority capital 8.0 million crowns, of which 2.225 million crowns had already been repaid . Due to the bankruptcy of the Société Belge des chemins de fer on June 26, 1937, the Austrian Federal Railways (BBÖ, later ÖBB) had to take over the operation of the EWA on a lease basis on July 1 of the same year . On January 1, 1942, the company was finally completely dissolved and integrated into the state railway , at that time the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR).

Note: The “§” in the BBÖ column means that these machines were not given new numbers when the Austrian Federal Railways took over operations, but were only renumbered by the Deutsche Reichsbahn. The renumbering of the class 52 70 to 53 78 became necessary due to the commissioning of the class 52 war locomotives .
