Touffait as a player

Adolphe Touffait (born March 29, 1907 in Rennes , † March 12, 1990 in Nanterre ) was a French football player who spent a significant part of his career at Stade Rennes and played once for the national team of his country. He then worked as a lawyer and as such a judge at the European Court of Justice from 1976 to 1982 .

Life in football

Club career

Touffait played for the Cadets de Bretagne club in his hometown of Rennes before moving to city rivals Stade Rennes UC in 1925 . In 1926, the midfielder returned to his ex-club before returning to Stade Rennes in 1927. This was followed by a year that he had to spend in the second team due to a non-existent player license. After moving up to the first selection, which played under amateur conditions due to the lack of a professional league , he advanced to the top performers and in 1929 received the office of team captain. Besides the football field, he also performed an important service for the club as such by convincing players like Walter Kaiser and Jaroslav Bouček to move to Rennes; For the engagement of Bouček and other actors he had made a trip to Czechoslovakia .

In 1932, Division 1 was a first division for France under professional conditions and Touffait was one of the teams with the Stade Rennes UC that had qualified for this. However, he missed the opening game and only made his debut when the team brought in their first win of the season on September 18, 1932 in a 3-1 win against CA Paris on the second match day. From then on he was regularly called up, but had no permanent seat. From 1933 he had to change his name due to his appointment as judge and played under the pseudonym Delourme , which was his mother's maiden name. Because he had hardly been used before, which was also due to his obligations as a judge, he decided in 1935 at the age of 28 after 35 first division games without a goal and numerous other games for Rennes in the years before 1932 to end his career.

National team

Touffait was 25 when he made his debut for the French national team on April 10, 1932, at the age of 25 in a 2-1 loss to Italy . The friendly game was the only game he played for the senior national team. However, because of his studies, which he pursued at the same time as his football career, he was also able to play for the French university selection team.

After his active time, he carried out various functions in the national association Fédération Française de Football and was temporarily its vice-president.

Career as a lawyer

Touffait studied law at the same time as his football career and was appointed judge in Valenciennes in 1933 . He then went to the Seine department , where he was employed as a public prosecutor. In the years after the Second World War he was involved, among other things, in the coming to terms with war crimes. In 1962 he became the first President of the Paris Court of Appeals and in the same year was part of an observer mission in the Algerian War , where he was seriously injured by being shot at. In 1968 he was appointed General Procurator of the Public Prosecutor's Office at the Court of Cassation .

He stayed that way until he rose again in 1976, when he was 69 years old when he took up his post as judge at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg on October 26, 1976. Touffait, who was a staunch supporter of European integration, belonged to the body for six years until 1982. He died on March 12, 1990 at the age of 82.
