Adrián Bonilla (* 1958 in Riobamba ) is an Ecuadorian international education politician.

Early years and academic training

Adrián Bonilla was born in Riobamba , Ecuador , in 1958 . His father was Edelberto Bonilla, a lawyer and leader of the Socialist Party who became president of the National Congress of Ecuador and held several public offices. His mother, Clemencia Soria, was a teacher. She studied law and sociology at the University ( Universidad Central ) of Ecuador and completed postgraduate studies at FLACSO Ecuador (Political Science) and the University of Miami , where she earned a Masters and a PhD in International Relations.

Adrián Bonilla received his PhD and MA in International Relations from the University of Miami. He graduated from the University of Ecuador (Universidad Central de Ecuador) with a degree in political and social sciences. He was elected Executive Director of the EU-LAC Foundation by all member states at the suggestion of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean . The EU-LAC Foundation is an international, intergovernmental organization committed to promoting the relationship between Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe. Before joining the EU-LAC Foundation, Adrián Bonilla was State Secretary for Higher Education with Ministerial Rank in Ecuador (2018–2019); he was general secretary for the entire region of the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences FLACSO (2012–2016) and in this international academic organization also director of the Ecuadorian branch (2004–2012).

Bonilla has published fifteen books and numerous articles in prestigious academic journals and books in Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe and the United States as an author and editor. He was a lecturer and visiting professor at several universities and a member of the editorial boards of Global Governance, Contexto Internacional and the CIDOB magazine D'Afers Internacionals, Pensamiento Iberoamericano and published other specialist publications. His work deals with the topics of foreign policy, security and multilateralism in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Bonilla was Vice-President of the Advisory Council on External Relations in Ecuador and also worked as an international election observer. He was director of the Latin American Council for International Relations (RIAL), the Latin American Defense Studies Network (RESDAL), the European Union-Latin American Relations Observatory (OBREAL) and the Ibero-American Network for International Relations (RIBEI).

National Secretary for Higher Education

Bonilla was appointed National Secretary for Higher Education of Ecuador in 2018 and has been Vice Minister in this secretariat since 2017.

General Secretary of the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences FLACSO

Adrián Bonilla has been elected Secretary General by the governments of 18 countries that make up the international academic organization for postgraduate teaching and research FLACSO. He is the legal representative of this organization, which has 15 academic units across the region and was active in Costa Rica from 2012 to 2016.

Director of FLACSO's Ecuador site

Since he was re-elected once, Bonilla was director for the Ecuador site of FLACSO, the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences, which is a university for graduate programs, from 2004 to 2012. During his tenure, FLACSO was the top rated university in Ecuador. The institution's 30,000 square meter urban campus was inaugurated and completed with several buildings and facilities at the time under Bonilla's leadership.

Academics

Adrián Bonilla is an expert in the analysis of Latin American foreign policy, regional security and multilateralism. He initiated the international relations program of FLACSO Ecuador.
