Adrian Zahra (born September 24, 1990 in Melbourne ) is an Australian-Italian football player .

Career

Zahra, who has Maltese and Italian ancestors, joined the junior division of the Melbourne Knights at the age of 15 , for which he was also used in the adult division in the Victorian Premier League from 2007 . In 2009 he was awarded for one season to Western Suburbs , who played in the second highest state league. The fast winger had his breakthrough in 2010 when he was used in all Knights league games, finished third in the player of the season at the end of the season and was also named the VPL's best U-21 player. In September 2010 he received a short-term contract with the A-League club Melbourne Heart , where he had already trained in the pre-season, and immediately established himself there on the right wing. His professional debut on October 8, 2010 in the derby against Melbourne Victory was followed by 18 further appearances and two goals in the following months, at the end of December 2010 he signed a contract until 2013.

In another derby against Melbourne Victory on January 22, 2011, his career was abruptly interrupted when he was brutally fouled in the 79th minute by Victory captain Kevin Muscat . Zahra was hit by Muscat with a straddle at the level of the right knee and sustained a serious knee injury that required surgery. Due to the injury, he missed a large part of the 2011/12 season, in which he only returned to the field towards the end of the season and was used for the youth team in the National Youth League . In August 2012, he asked the club to terminate his contract early in order to start a fresh start with league rivals Perth Glory . At Perth, Zahra came in the following two seasons neither under Ian Ferguson , nor under Alistair Edwards or Kenny Lowe beyond the role of the substitute player and left the club when his contract expired in May 2014.

In mid-2014 Zahra moved to Malta to the reigning champions FC Valletta , his contract there was terminated at the beginning of December after only four league appearances. Zahra was considered a foreign player in the Maltese Premier League because he had no Maltese, but only an Italian passport.
