Adriana Mitchell Caselotti (born May 16, 1916 in Bridgeport , Connecticut , † January 19, 1997 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American singer and voice actress , who became known as the vocalist of Snow White from the Disney film.

Life

Adriana Caselotti was born in Connecticut to Italian immigrants, but grew up in Rome , where her mother Maria worked as an opera singer. When she returned to the USA, her father Guido was looking for a young singer on behalf of the Walt Disney Company who would speak and sing the title role for the cartoon Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). More than 150 candidates had already been heard and rejected, including teenage star Deanna Durbin . Caselotti finally proposed his daughter, who immediately found Disney's approval after the screen tests. Her clear, gentle soprano seemed ageless (Caselotti was already 18) and became an integral part of the figure, whose appearance was not designed after Adriana Caselotti, but after the dancer Marjorie Belcher (later wife of Gower Champion ).

After the film had become an immense economic success for Disney through re-performances, video releases and numerous phonograms on which her voice could be heard, Caselotti, who had received a one-time fee of $ 970 for 48 days of work, tried unsuccessfully to the company To sue royalties .

In the following years she appeared more and more at public events such as animation film festivals and also achieved a relatively high level of awareness as the spokeswoman for Snow White. She also published a book called Do You Like To Sing? .

She also had small roles in singing the classic films The Wizard of Oz ( The Wizard of Oz , 1939) and Is not life beautiful? ( It's a Wonderful Life , 1946).

Adriana Caselotti died on 19 January 1997 at the age of 80 at her home in Los Angeles at a cancer .
