Adrien Nocent

Adrien Nocent (born February 2, 1913 in Charleroi , † December 9, 1996 in Rome ) was a Belgian Benedictine monk , theologian and liturgist .

life and work

Nocent entered Maredsous Abbey at the age of 19 , professed in 1933, and was ordained a priest in 1938. He studied in Keizersberg Abbey (French: Mont César ) near Leuven , from where the liturgical movement in Belgium had started. His teachers were Bernard Capelle (1884–1961) and Bernard Botte (1893–1980). From 1952 he gave lectures in Brussels at the Center international Lumen Vitae . He studied further at the University of Leuven and in Paris at the École pratique des hautes études . There he graduated in 1959 with the work Un Fragment de sacramentaire de Sens au Xe siècle supervised by Gabriel Le Bras (1891-1970) . La liturgie baptismale de la province ecclésiastique de Sens dans les manuscrits du IXe au XVIe siècles (published in: Miscellanea liturgica in onore di SE il cardinale Giacomo Lercaro . Vol. 2. Rome. Paris. Tournai 1967, pp. 649-794). Then he taught and researched in Rome at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo , whose Liturgical Institute he built up together with Salvatore Marsili (1910–1983) and Cipriano Vaggagini (1909–1999).

Nocent was from 1964 advisor to the Second Vatican Council and from 1969 advisor to the Congregation for Divine Worship . From 1984 he was the first editor of the magazine Ecclesia orans (successor: Anscar Chupungco, 1939-2013). Nocent has given numerous lectures in Italy, Canada, the United States , Cameroon , Senegal and Togo for decades . He was one of the most important academic companions of the Council's liturgical reform.

Nocent, who played the violin himself, was Vice President of the Arthur Grumiaux Foundation.
