Advent Rising is a science fiction third-person shooter for Xbox and PC released in 2005 , developed by GlyphX Games and published by Majesco . Orson Scott Card was responsible for the dialogue and Tommy Tallarico for the music .

Game mechanics

As is usual for the genre, the player in Advent Rising shoots or throws grenades. He can carry two different weapons. In addition to the normal weapons, special mystical abilities are also available to the player, which allow him to lift objects and opponents and to throw them through the air. The strength of these abilities increases as the game progresses. It is also possible for the player to dodge enemy fire with an evasive action, using this action ensures that the game briefly goes into slow motion, similar to Max Payne . Opponents can be sighted using the second analog stick by moving the stick briefly in the direction of the opponent who is to be sighted.

In addition to the normal sections on foot, the game also has sections in which you control an off-road vehicle and sections in which you control a spaceship.

The course of the game is generally linear, but there are a few situations in which you can make a decision that affects the further course of the game. At the beginning you have the choice whether you shoot or stun a crazy marine, which then leads to different comments when you fight with the marines against the "Seeker". Later, when you leave the station with the escape capsule , you have to choose between your brother and your fiancée; the choice ensures who accompanies you in the following chapters of the game.

action

The plot revolves around Gideon Wyeth, who, together with his brother Ethan Wyeth, accompanies a diplomatic mission that is on the way to make first contact with the alien race of the Aurelian. Once there, they learn from the Aurelians that humanity is threatened by another race, the sea core. Before any preparations can be made, however, the Seekers emerge from hyperspace and begin their attack on the orbiting space station and the planet Edumea below. Gideon, who is meanwhile on his way back to the space station, is forced to make an emergency landing and, after a short fight on the space station, goes into an escape capsule before the station is destroyed.

When he arrives on the planet Edumea, he helps the Marines defend the planet, but soon finds out that the Seeker want to attack the planet with a giant asteroid. Edumea is then evacuated and shortly afterwards destroyed by the asteroid. Gideon, one of the few survivors, accepts the Aurelian's invitation to come aboard.

From the Aurelian he learns that mystical powers slumber in humanity; to uncover them, Gideon then begins his training and learns to lift objects with the power of his thoughts and the like. When the Aurelian ship arrives at the Aurelian home planet, it is attacked by a Seeker spaceship. Since their own ship was defeated, the Aurelians and Gideon boarded the enemy ship. This crash-lands on the planet after the subsequent fight.

After they have freed the planet from the Seeker, they go to the Galactic Council to ask for assistance in the fight against the Seeker, as well as to punish them for their crimes against humanity. Once there, a Koroem appears, a person who has developed his full mystical power, who takes responsibility for the attack of the Seeker and has commissioned it. There is then a fight between Gideon and the Koroem.

Gideon wins the battle by opening a portal, opening the portal killing the Koroem. Gideon himself is sucked through the portal and lands on an ice planet, after a short march he collapses there and is asked by a horned creature to follow him. The game ends with this cliffhanger .
