Lists of aviation accidents

On December 16, 1973, a Tupolev Tu-124 crashed on Aeroflot flight 2022 from Vilnius to Moscow . All 51 occupants were killed in the accident.

plane

The Tupolev Tu-124W ( registration number : СССР-45061, c / n : 4351406) was delivered to the state airline Aeroflot in 1964 and was nine years old at the time of the accident. The aircraft was equipped with two Soloviev D-20P - turbofan - engines equipped.

course

All times given correspond to the time zone UTC + 3

At 6:10 p.m. the plane took off from Vilnius Airport in Lithuania and climbed to a cruising altitude of 7800  m . At 7:03 p.m., the pilots received clearance from air traffic control to descend to 5700 m. In the descent, however, the aircraft went into a steep dive , which the pilots could intercept at an altitude of 2000 m. Because the artificial horizons were not designed for such extreme situations and therefore could no longer show the true flight position in the further course, it was already dark outside and the pilots were disoriented by the dive, the following climb was performed too steeply. The speed dropped to 370  km / h and stalled . The aircraft went into a dive again, with the pilots unable to intercept the aircraft due to the low altitude. The aircraft hit a field at 19:13:10 hrs with a vertical inclination of 80 ° downwards and a speed of 900 km / h, 480 m east of the village of Karacharovo in Volokolamsky Rajon, leaving behind a 140 m long, 190 m long one wide and 15 m deep crater. All 51 inmates died.

root cause

A short circuit in the control of the horizontal stabilizer was found to be the cause of the dive .
