Aeroflot flight 964 was a scheduled flight from Kutaisi to Moscow that ended on October 13, 1973 in the crash of a Tupolev Tu-104 .

course

The Tu-104, which took off from Kopitnari Airport at 6:10 p.m., was supposed to make a right turn at around 8:16 p.m. at an altitude of 400 meters. The pilots tilted the aircraft 40 ° to the right. Shortly thereafter, the machine leaned 75 degrees to the left, fell in a spiral to the ground, and exploded. The wreckage of the Tu-104 damaged a power line , causing a power outage in several villages. All 122 people, including eight stowaways , died. It is the most serious aircraft accident involving a Tu-104.

Cause of accident

The reason for the crash was determined to be the failure of the artificial horizon and the course top due to a power failure in the system of both devices. Because it was already dark and cloudy , the pilots lost their bearings and crashed.

Similar accidents

Just 13 days earlier, a Tu-104B on Aeroflot flight 3932 crashed shortly after taking off from Yekaterinburg Airport . All 108 inmates died.
