Lists of aviation accidents

Aeroflot flight 3932 was a scheduled flight from Sverdlovsk to Vladivostok that ended with the crash of a Tupolev Tu-104 on September 30, 1973 .

course

The Tu-104 took off from Sverdlovsk Airport at 8:33 p.m. on a course of 256 °. The air traffic controller asked the pilot shortly afterwards to fly a left turn and climb to an altitude of 1,500 meters.

The pilots tilted the aircraft 35-40 degrees to the left and started the turn. At around 8:37 p.m., the aircraft tilted almost 75–80 ° to the left and fell from a height of about 1,200 meters towards the ground. At over 800 km / h the Tu-104 bored into the earth and exploded. All 108 people on board died.

Cause of accident

The reason for the crash was the failure of the artificial horizon and course top due to a power failure in the system that supplied both devices with power. Because it was already dark and cloudy, the pilots lost their bearings and crashed. It was not possible to determine whether a technical defect or an error on the part of the cockpit crew led to the failure of the instruments.

Similar accidents

Just 13 days later, a Tu-104B on Aeroflot Flight 964 crashes while approaching Moscow Domodedovo Airport . All 122 inmates died.
