Aeropuerto de Ilopango is a military airfield and air base of the Fuerza Armada de El Salvador .
location
It is located in the middle of residential areas in the city of Ilopango , around ten kilometers east of the capital San Salvador . The Carretera Panamericana Nº 1 crosses the runway of the airfield through an underpass.
history
The military airfield was opened in 1923. During the ethnocide in 1932 , military planes took off from here to bomb indigenous people . Until the opening of the Aeropuerto Internacional de El Salvador in 1970, the military airfield was also used for scheduled air traffic.
Due to the increasing development and city expansion, further expansion of the airfield was no longer possible for safety reasons. The airfield is currently only used for military and limited civil aviation operations, mainly by small aircraft . Scheduled air traffic has not taken place since the new airport opened. In 2001 the military handed the airfield over to the operating organization Commision Ejecutiva Portuaria Autónoma .
Part of the military facility is used by the Museo Militar de la Fuerza Armada de El Salvador . The headquarters of the Autoridad de Aviación Civil (Aviation Authority ) is also located at the airport . Since 1929, the airfield has also been the home of the aviation community Club de Aviación Civil y Reserva de El Salvador .
Events
The Ilopango Air Show has been taking place on the military airfield every year for 15 years, mostly on the last weekend in January .
