description

Aextoxicon punctatum is a large evergreen tree that reaches heights of growth of 15 to 20 meters and a trunk diameter of around 0.80 meters. The 0.5 to 1.5 cm long stalked leaves , arranged alternately to opposite on the branches, are simple. The leaf blade is 5 to 9 long and 2 to 4 cm wide. The leaf margins are smooth. Stipules are missing.

The species is dioecious separately sexed ( diocesan ). The racemose inflorescences are in leaf axils, whereby the female inflorescences are much shorter than the male. The unisexual, radial symmetry flowers are five-fold and have a double perianth . There are five free sepals . The five free, whitish petals are nailed. There is a discus. In the male flowers there are five free, fertile stamens and five staminodes . The female flowers contain staminodes and the two carpels are fused into an upper pistil with a stylus and two stigmas .

The drupes are 1 to 1.2 cm long and 0.6 to 0.7 cm wide; they look similar to olives, hence one of the common Spanish names Olivillo.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 32.
