Immediately south of this junction is a residential area with three to five-story apartment buildings, which is also sometimes referred to as Afföller.
History as an airfield
At the beginning of the 20th century, after the International Aviation Exhibition in Frankfurt in 1909 with 1.5 million visitors, the desire to take part in the “conquest of the air” also emerged in Marburg. The Kurhessischer Verein für Luftfahrt von 1909 was founded. V. Founding members were u. a. Alfred Wegener and the director of the Physics Institute Franz Richarz (chairman).
Initially, the focus was on scientific measurements of the atmosphere. In 1910 the club in Frankfurt bought a gas balloon that was baptized “Marburg”.
The cooperation between the association and Marburg University was very close in the 30s and 40s. The Institute for Physical Education had its own aviation department. At that time there were three motorized aircraft and forty gliders on the Afföller site.
After the Second World War and the subsequent flight ban, gliding began again in 1951 and, a few years later, powered flight. In the 1960s, a separate hangar was built for the motorized and glider planes, but it was only used for a few years, as the aviation area had to give way to a road construction project at the end of the decade. The association moved to the newly built Marburg-Schönstadt airfield in the municipality of Schönstadt a few kilometers away (today part of Cölbe ).
Events
On the newly expanded Afföller exhibition area, measuring over 20,000 square meters, u. a. the Oberhessenschau (OHS) and the Memo-Bauen trade fair take place every year.
