location

The forester's house Affenthal is located in a north-westerly direction in the forest from the Walting municipality on the Jura Hochstraße (district road EI 21 ) leading from Eichstätt to Enkering . A forest path leads south of Walting to the Affenthalgrund.

history

Various attempts at interpreting the name are not satisfactory.

The first mention is from 908; King Ludwig the child left hunting and wood rights and pig fattening rights ("Geggerich") to the Bishop of Eichstätt in the Affenthal area. In 1166 a nobleman named Rüdeger von Affenthal was mentioned; It has not yet been possible to determine where its (castle) seat was. From Eichstätter Bishop Otto (1182-1196) two farms in Affenthal came as a gift to the Schottenkloster in Eichstätt . In later times, Affenthal only existed as a forest restaurant on the edge of a forest district of the same name and at the northern beginning of the valley of the same name. After the restaurant was closed in 1962, there is only a former forester's house.

The largest spruce in Bavaria stood in the forest near Affenthal until 1910 , with a crown 50 meters long and 280 years old; a quarter of a slice of the trunk is exhibited in the Eichstätt Forestry Office.
