The Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature reserve in the northeast of the Nigerian state of Cross River . It occupies an area of 117 km² in the administrative area of the greater municipality of Boje Boke , in the up to 1,281 meters high Afi Mountains.

The Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary was founded in 2000 and together with the Mbe Mountains Community Wildlife Sanctuary , the Afi Mountains Forest Reserve, the Okwangwo Sector of the Cross River National Park and the Takamanda National Park in Cameroon, forms a biosphere corridor . This has been administratively supervised by the Cross River State Forestry Commission (CRSFC) in cooperation with the Wildlife Conservation Society Nigeria since 2011 . The main purpose of the cooperation is to protect the primates living in Nigeria and also include the local population. The project is supported by international organizations, including Birdlife International and the German association Rettet den Drill e. V.

The topography of the nature reserve is considered to be extremely mountainous, with steep rock faces, deeply cut gorges and long ridges. On the western mountain flanks there is an extensive flatland region in which up to 20 million migratory birds from the northern hemisphere , especially swallows from Europe , spend the winter in the winter months . The annual rainfall is between 2,000 and 2,500 mm, depending on the intensity of the West African monsoons . A distinct dry season prevails from November to February.

fauna and Flora

The flora of the Afi Mountains is determined by a lowland rainforest in which the tree species Berlinia confusa , Coula edulis , Hannoa klaineana , Klainedoxa gabonensis , Khaya ivorensis and Lophira alata occur. In the dry season, bush fires break out, creating clearings in which a wide range of herbs and grasses grow, which in turn form an important food source for the Cross River gorilla ( Gorilla gorilla diehli ). The group of 25 to 40 animals living there marks the westernmost limit of distribution of the Cross River gorilla. Other large primates living in the area are the drill ( Mandrillus leucophaeus ), the Nigerian-Cameroonian chimpanzee ( Pan troglodytes ellioti ) subspecies of the common chimpanzee, and the red-nosed monkey ( Cercopithecus erythrotis ).

natural reserve

Fauna and flora are also threatened by illegal banana and cocoa farms in the protected area. In 2013 there were reports of around 600 illegal farms using nets and traps to decimate animal populations, including in the adjacent areas of the still missing biotope network . With cyber tracking and environmental education in schools, the 17 rangers try to protect endangered animal species.
