John Vandling Lesher
John Vandling Lesher (born July 27, 1866 in Union County , Pennsylvania , † May 3, 1932 in Danville , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1913 and 1921 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Born on a farm, John Lesher attended public schools in his home country and the State Normal School in Bloomsburg . After that he worked as a teacher for some time. In 1897 he graduated from Bucknell University in Lewisburg . Between 1898 and 1902 he served in various units of the national guard of his state, in which he made it to captain. After studying law at the same time and being admitted to the bar in 1900, he began working in this profession in Sunbury . He was also serving as an assistant district attorney in Northumberland County . He also worked in the banking and real estate industries.
Politically, Lesher was a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1912 congressional elections he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded John Geiser McHenry on March 4, 1913 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1921 . During this time the First World War fell . In addition, the 16th , 17th , 18th and 19th amendments to the Constitution were ratified in those years .
In 1920, John Lesher was not re-elected. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced again as a lawyer in Sunbury. He died in Danville on May 3, 1932.
