Africa University is a private, Pan-African and Methodist organization in Zimbabwe . Located around 17 kilometers from the center of Mutares , it grants both Bachelor and Master degrees in various fields of study.

history

The development of the founding of the United Methodist Church in the United States of America was initiated . In 1988 the United Methodist General Conference approved plans to set up a university in Africa. It played a leading role Rev. Roger Ireson , director of the United Methodist General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (German about: United Methodist Main Committee for Higher Education and clergy)

Africa University opened its doors in March 1992 as the first private and international university in Zimbabwe. The first forty students came from twelve African countries to take up studies in agricultural sciences , natural resources and theology . Her first vice chancellor was the clergyman John Wesley Zwomunondiita Kurewa. He had been actively involved in the development since 1989 in the course of the planning phase before the university was founded and managed the university until he resigned in December 1997.

Africa University had 1,007 students in 2009 and an estimated 1,200 students in 2011.

Management structure

There is a 30-person body to manage the university, chaired by the Chancellor in the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors . This role is performed by Bishop David Kekumba Yemba .

The operational management is the responsibility of the Vice Chancellor , whose role corresponds to that of the German Rector . The current incumbent Munashe Furusa was previously Professor of African Studies and Institute Director at California State University Dominguez Hills and Executive Director of the California African American Political and Economic Institute (CAAPEI).

The former incumbent Fanuel Tagwira previously worked in the Ministry of Agriculture of Zimbabwe, where for 10 years he was responsible for the functions of Principal Research Officer (German for example: senior official for research) and Head of Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition (German for example: area manager for soil fertility and plant nutrition ).
