Ivana Kobilca (born December 20, 1861 in Ljubljana ; † December 4, 1926 there ) was a Slovenian painter who cultivated realism .

life and work

Ivana Kobilca came to Munich in 1880 to learn handicrafts. She broke off this training and became a student of Alois Erdelt . In 1889 she organized the first art exhibition in Ljubljana.

She lived, worked and studied in various European cities such as Vienna , Sarajevo , Berlin , Paris and Munich and was a member of the Société nationale des beaux-arts in Paris. Many of her works are still lifes or portraits . In later years she tended more towards impressionism .

Her most famous pictures are:

  • Kofetarica (The Coffee Drinker) from 1888
  • Citrarica (the zither )
  • Likarice (The Ironers) from 1891
  • Holandsko dekle (A Dutch girl)
  • Portret sestre Fani (Portrait of Sister Fani) from 1889
  • Poletje (summer) from 1889.

Ivana Kobilca is the most important Slovenian painter. Judged according to her social origin, her way of life, her ideals and her way, she was an urban artist. She was one of the Slovenian realists who created her most important paintings in the 1880s. Kobilica's greatest tribute to Slovenian art was paid to it during the time she lived abroad. It had the greatest importance for painting people, especially portraits and the typical life of people, both urban and rural. During the time she spent in Berlin, flowers still life became her main genre . The main colors of her early works are dark, only the pastel tones are lighter. Later, from 1889, her paintings became lighter and got the blue nuances typical of Paris at that time. In the last years of her life, she mainly painted portraits of prominent people.

The portrait of Kobilca was depicted on the Slovenian 5000 tolar banknote.
