The African Nations Cup 2009 was the first edition of the tournament for national football teams organized by the African Football Association .

The opening game of the African Nations Cup between hosts Ivory Coast and Zambia kicked off on February 22nd at 4 p.m. local time. DR Congo defeated Ghana 2-0 in the final on March 8th and won the first title.
