Afshin Ellian (born February 27, 1966 in Tehran ) is a Dutch legal scholar, legal philosopher, poet and essayist. Since 2005 he has been a professor at the University of Leiden . He is an atheist and is considered an influential critic of Islam .

In 1989 he came to the Netherlands as a political refugee from Iran .

In 2007 Ellian stood up for the Dutch critic of Islam, Ehsan Jami , who was repeatedly a victim of Islamist violence after the founding of the Dutch branch of the Central Council of Ex-Muslims . It was only at Ellian's insistence that Ehsan Jami was granted special personal protection. Ellian works for the elimination of Salafism .

On the occasion of the mass demonstrations after the Iranian presidential elections in 2009 , Ellian appealed in an open letter to Ayatollah Khamenei , following the example of South Africa and its truth commissions, to peacefully end the tyranny in Iran.
