After School Nightmare ( Japanese 放 課後 保健室 , Hōkago Hokenshitsu , eng . " Sick room after school") is a manga series by the Japanese illustrator Setona Mizushiro , which appeared in Japan from 2004. The work has about 2000 pages and can be classified into the genres Shōjo , Drama and Horror .

The story is about a group of students who, in a shared dream, have to cope with their psychological problems. The main character is intersex .

action

Mashiro Ichijō ( 一条 真 白 ) was brought up as a boy, but is a hermaphrodite , i.e. both male and female. His classmates don't know anything about it, he's even a crush for many girls. One day a nurse takes him to a new class that he is supposed to attend once a week. In this, he dives into a shared dream with other students in which they should overcome their fears and psychological problems. To complete the class, students need to find a key. In the dream all take on different shapes than in reality, the shape they have in the dream reflects their inner self. Mashiro appears in boys 'or girls' school uniform, depending on his emotional state.

Mashiro cannot hide his secret for long from his classmate Kureha Fujishima ( 藤 島 ). She is drawn to him because of his feminine side, because she hates men, as she was raped once in early childhood. So both come together, but the relationship does not last long. The self-confident Sō Mizuhashi ( 水 橋 蒼 ) has meanwhile also discovered Mashiro's secret and wants to conquer it for himself. However, he also has a mysterious relationship with his older sister Ai Mizuhashi ( 水 橋 蓝 ), who does not want to give him up. After confessing his love for Mashiro, they start an affair, but it doesn't last long. Kureha does her part, first because she distrusts Sō, then to get revenge on Mashiro after they split up. Eventually she befriends Sō.

Mashiro can come to terms with his feminine identity over time. With Sō it turns out that his sister Ai is actually not his real sister at all, but just a fantasy figure that he created as a child to overcome loneliness. He and Mashiro start a relationship. However, since Mashiro is at peace with himself, he leaves school the following Thursday. In the final lesson he kills his male self in the dream world and before he leaves school the nurse appears and explains to him what school is really all about.

The world in which the characters live is not real, but the world of souls not yet born. The souls must accept any fate and, in the special lessons, acquire the maturity and strength to cope with this fate. If they pass that exam and finish school, they will be born in the real world but forget everything that was in that school before. Mashiro is born a girl, leads a normal life and meets Sō again.

Publications

From the July 2004 issue to the December 2007 issue, the manga appeared in Princess magazine in Japan . The individual chapters published in the magazine were also published in ten edited volumes by Akita-Shoten- Verlag.

The work was published in English by Go! Comi in America and in French at Asuka Comics . The publisher Carlsen Comics published in 2009 ten volumes in German since February.

Reception and interpretation

Dirk Deppey writes at The Comics Journal that the manga contains a lot of psychoanalysis , particularly related to the fears and problems of puberty. These would be symbolized in the dreams. The manga would therefore fit into Setona Mizushiro's other works such as Day X , which are just as psychological. Because of its topic, the work is particularly recommended for young people, as they can best understand the problems presented. For adults, however, the story could be too obvious.
