The Church of Agia Paraskevi is a Cypriot Orthodox church building in the center of Geroskipou in Cyprus . With its five domes, the church is the second Byzantine sacred building of this type in Cyprus, alongside the church of Saints Barnabas and Hilarion in Peristerona . Their plan goes back to the St. John's Church in Ephesus , which was built in Justinian times, and the Church of the Apostles in Constantinople .

description

The three-aisled Church of Agia Paraskevi is divided inside by walls that support the domes . There are three domes above the central nave, the middle of which is flanked by the two above the side aisles, giving the impression of a cruciform structure. Reaching as far as the apse of the central nave, a domed chapel is attached to the east of the south aisle, which used to be a martyrdom , a structure in a place that was closely related to the life or relic of a saint or martyr. The south-east corner of the church is determined by a bell tower built in 1886. The narthex-like western part was built in the 19th century for women attending church services and enlarged in 1931.

The extremely thick walls have murals inside . The oldest remains are aniconical, purely decorative motifs that go back to the time of the iconoclasm in the 9th century. Above it is a layer of frescoes from the 12th century, of which the death of the Virgin on the north wall of the Naos is best preserved. Most of the frescoes are from the 15th century and have stories from the New Testament as their subject. The most important icon (14th – 15th centuries) dates from the same period , depicting Panagia Geroskipiotissa on one side and a crucifixion on the other.
