The place Geroskipou ( Greek Γεροσκήπου ), also Geroskipos , is a few kilometers east of Ktima on the road to Limassol ( B6 ) between the ancient port of Nea Paphos and the Aphrodite sanctuary in Kouklia on Cyprus . The city had 5509 inhabitants at the census in 2001 and already 5769 inhabitants in 2005. It is located in the Paphos district .

history

The name points to a former meaning: "Hieros kipos" means sacred grove or garden and "Geros kipos" (old garden). The city was already mentioned by Strabo . It is possible that there was a shrine to Aphrodite in Geroskipos. Sacred groves were often dedicated to the goddess, also called Aphrodite en kipois (Garden Aphrodite), as in Tamassos , Myrikai and Idalion . Remnants of ancient buildings can be found scattered across the village. Corinthian capitals flank the entrances to the courtyard of the church of Agia Paraskevi.

The church of Agia Paraskevi, built in the center of the village in the 9th century, is a Byzantine church with five domes.

Folklore Museum

The Geroskipos Folklore Museum (in the house of Hadji Smith Zymboulakis) is the former residence of the British Consul of Paphos, Andreas Zymboulakis, appointed by Admiral Sir Sidney Smith in 1799. In 1826 he was succeeded by his son, who took the name of the benefactor. The house is named after him. Apart from its rich folklore content, it offers one of the purest examples of Cypriot folk architecture.
