history

The first Ottoman census from 1831 names 34 Christian heads of household, it did not record a single Muslim. Even later, the number of Turks, as Muslims were increasingly narrowed by definition, remained extremely small. For example, Turkish residents were only counted in 1891 and 1911, namely 8 and 2 respectively. Under British colonial rule, the number of "Greeks" increased, which included not only the Greek-speaking population but every non-Muslim, from 390 in 1891 continuously up to 660 in 1921. In 1901 452 were counted, ten years later already 546. Around the Second World War the population stagnated from 638 in 1931 to 631 in 1946. The internal conflicts on the island caused many families to emigrate, so that by 1960 the population fell to 422 In 1973 there were only 355.

Between July and August 1974, all residents fled southward from the advancing Turkish troops. Two years later, settlers from southwestern Turkey arrived from Denizli province , more precisely from Acıpayam and Çardak districts . In 1978 there were again 302 inhabitants, in 1996 there were 352, ten years later 348. In 2011 there were 429 inhabitants.
