Aglycon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aglycon e are organic chemical compounds . The aglycone residue R is a non- sugar component in a glycoside . Glycosides have the general structure R – O – Z.

In an aglycon, the glycosyl group of the glycoside has been replaced by a hydrogen atom.

Genin is a synonym , as the name of the aglycone usually ends in genin . An example of this is dioscin , a steroid glycoside or saponin . It was first discovered in Dioscorea species and named after them. The corresponding aglycon is called diosgenin and is a steroid derivative.

In connection with anthocyanin glycosides, the sugar-free portion is also referred to as aglycon. Example: Idaein is a cyanidin -3- galactose glycoside; the cyanidin would be the aglycon.
