Acalypta parvula is a bug from the family of net bugs (Tingidae).

features

The bugs are 1.8 to 2.5 millimeters long. In contrast to the other net bugs, the side edge of the pronotum in Acalypta parvula is not extended and has a net-like structure. The pronotum also lacks the typical quills of net bugs. The head, antennae and center of the pronotum are black, the hemielytras and the anterior part of the pronotum are yellow-brown. The legs are reddish in color. In northern Germany you can only find specimens with shortened (brachypteric) wings, in the south, however, fully winged (macroptere) animals are rarely found.

distribution and habitat

The species is widespread in Western and Central Europe and Scandinavia. It is missing in Finland. It occurs only sporadically in Central Europe, but it can be very common locally. It occurs from the lowlands to montane locations. In the UK, it is common and rare in the south. In the north of Germany, mainly moist habitats such as moors and wet meadows are settled, but also dry habitats such as limestone and sandy grasslands, dunes and dry forest clearings. They are also found in areas influenced by salt.

Way of life

The animals live on various rush plants (Juncaceae) and sour grass plants (Cyperaceae). In forests they are particularly found on grove rims ( luzula ). They can be found at the base of the grass or in the inflorescences. At higher altitudes and in the north of their range, one generation is trained per year. There is a second generation per year in warm and dry habitats in the south. The wintering takes place as an imago . The females pierce their eggs deep into the tissue of the food plants.
