Similar species

Agrotis catalaunensis is larger (wingspan 32 to 35 millimeters), usually darker in color and has more rectangular fore wings.

distribution and habitat

The nominate form Agrotis puta puta occurs in southern, western and parts of Central Europe as well as in the Middle East to Iraq and Afghanistan . It can also be found in North Africa . In the Greek mountains it was found at an altitude of 2000 meters. In the British Isles of Scilly is a subspecies Agrotis puta insula home. The narrow-winged earth owl prefers to colonize sandy grassland and ruderal areas as well as the edges of quarry ponds and gravel pits .

Way of life

The species forms one to three generations per year, whose moths fly from April to October. These are mainly nocturnal and sometimes suckle on different flowers. They come to the bait and fly to artificial light sources . The caterpillars feed on the roots and basal leaves of various plants, including dock ( Rumex ), dandelion ( Taraxacum ), knotweed ( Polygonum ) and lettuce species ( Lactuca ). The last generation of caterpillars overwinters.

Danger

The narrow-winged earth owl occurs occasionally in the northern, western and southwestern German states. In Baden-Württemberg it is included in the red list of endangered species on the warning list.
