Aguacate Lagoon is a lake and a private nature reserve in western Belize .
geography
The nature reserve is northeast of the Mennonite settlement Spanish Lookout . The sanctuary is a 20-minute drive from there. The lake (lagoon) through which Cadena Creek flows is an herbaceous swamp with corresponding vegetation. The protected area also includes another lake and a sinkhole (Green Hole Cenote ⊙ ). The area is about 96 m above sea level on a layer level above the lowlands of the Belize River and comprises about 284 acres (114.9 ha).
The terrain includes savannah, open farmland, swamp, and subtropical forests.
history
In 1958 Mennonites came to the Spanish Lookout area from northern Mexico . They settled down as farmers. "Aguacate" is the Spanish word for avocado and as the name suggests, the reserve is characterized by countless avocado trees.
The area was officially declared a private reserve in 1987 and is administered by Aguacate Park Officials .
nature
The varied biotopes offer a variety of animals habitat and are a worthwhile destination, especially for bird watchers. Resident bird species are herons, swallows, Vermillion Flycatcher ( Pyrocephalus obscurus ) Fork-tailed Flycatcher ( Tyrannus savana ), yellow-rumped warbler (Yellow-rumped Warbler - Dendroica coronata ), Weißschwanzaar (White-Tailed Kite - Elanus leucurus ), laughing falcon (Laughing Falcon - Herpetotheres cachinnans ), Meadowlark (Meadowlark - Sturnella or Leiste ) Jabiru ( Jabiru mycteria ), Jacamars (Jacamar) trogons , Puffbirds (Puff-bird), Rostbauchguan (Crested Guan - Penelope purpurascens ), Tuberkelhokko ( Crax rubra - English Great Curassow, Spanish: hocofaisán, Pavón Norteños), black-bellied whistling duck (Black-bellied Whistling Duck - Dendrocygna autumnalis ) and night heron , moorhens and Rails .
