The lazy birds or Tamatias (Bucconidae) are a family of the woodpecker birds . All kinds of the lazy birds live in tropical South America .
features
Rotten birds are small and look clumsy. In their physique they largely correspond to the glossy birds . The head is large and thick, the beak is short and ends in a hook. It looks similar to that of the unrelated strangler . The birds have a gloomy, not very contrasting plumage. It is sex-specific in some species. The wax skin and the nostrils are covered by strong bristles. The area around the eyes is not feathered, but has no connection to the wax skin. The tail is fan-shaped and the wings are short and wide, only in one species, the swallow- lazy bird ( Chelidoptera tenebrosa ), are they long and pointed. Lazy birds grow to be 16 to 20 cm tall.
Way of life
Most species of lazy birds are solitary, but Trappists are sociable birds and help each other to breed. Lazy birds often sit motionless on branches, this is what gave them their name. In this sitting position, they sunbathe or look for prey such as flies , bees and beetles , which they pounce on and catch in flight. Less often they pick up insects from the ground. The swallow-lazy bird seeks its prey in the air. The flight of this species is swallow-like and almost acrobatic. In the evening he can therefore be mistaken for a bat . He shows several adaptations to his life in the air: the wings described above, the wide mouth for insect hunting and stunted feet.
Lazy birds nest in groups or in pairs. They dig their nest holes in the ground, on bank slopes or in the structures of tree-dwelling termites . Both sexes participate in digging and padding the cave. The entrance is often camouflaged from enemies with branches and leaves. The clutch consists of two to three white eggs. These are alternately incubated by males and females. The young stay in the nest for 20 to 30 days.
