distribution and habitat

The species lives in damp, damp and wet mountain foothills and mountain forests at altitudes between 400 and 2000 meters. You can discover it in the dense, wild cloud forest as well as at the forest edges. In Venezuela it occurs in the Sierra de Perijá in the state of Zulia , occasionally in the Andes Táchiras , in the west of Méridas , from the northwest of Barina to the southeast of Lara . It can also be found in the Yaracuys Mountains and the Cordilleras from Carabobo to the Dependencias Federales and the southeast of Miranda . In Colombia it occurs on the Pacific slopes of the San Juan River near the 3950 meter high Cerro Tatamá as far as the Departamento de Nariño . Other areas of distribution are the eastern slopes of the West Andes Antioquias , both slopes of the central Andes of Quindíos , the East Cundinamarcas , the Serranía de la Macarena , the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Colombian part of the Sierra de Perijá.

behavior

The bird usually sits quietly in pairs for a long time on branches that are between 1 and 7 meters above the ground. They always keep a certain spatial distance from one another. You seem very lethargic, almost tame to the touch. In doing so, they carefully observe their surroundings. After long periods of rest, they occasionally break up to take in food and fluids. The food consists of relatively large insects and small vertebrates in relation to their bodies. After eating, they often return to their ancestral place. Occasionally it attacks swarms of ants or joins other flocks of birds. He builds his nest in caves that are on embankments or slopes. In front of the entrance they build small wreaths of sticks to protect them.

Subspecies

Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee wrote in 1949 in Caldasia Vol. 5 No. 23 described a subspecies called Malacoptila mystacalis pacifica . This subspecies is generally considered an invalid taxon . Thus, the species is considered monotypical .
