The Aguirre Passage is a strait between Lemaire Island and the Danco coast in the west of Antarctic Graham Land . It represents the northern entrance to Paradise Harbor .
This sea route was used for the first time by the research ship Belgica as part of the Belgica expedition (1897–1899) under the direction of the Belgian polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery . Between 1951 and 1973 Chile maintained a research station at Waterboat Point , a headland within the passage. The passage was named by participants in the Fifth Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1950–1951) after Pedro Aguirre Cerda (1879–1941), President of Chile from 1938 to 1941.
