A knob (use usually in the plural, the studs ; of late Middle High German / Middle Low German shag  , nodules in the tissue ',' wool flake ') is generally a bump-like elevation on a surface and particularly, in the original sense, a node-type thickener in a yarn or fabric . Shapes called knobs can be found on the one hand in nature and on the other hand in many objects from the artificial-technical area. The pimpling as a process can not only mean providing something with pimples, but also removing unwanted pimples that arise, for example, in the milled fabric production.

Pimples in nature

In nature there are many knob-like shapes that serve a wide variety of purposes - starting with the papillae on the mucous membrane of the tongue , which, with their roughness, make it easier for domestic cats to wash cats , to knobbed starfish (e.g. Panamanian knobbed starfish ) up to the knobbed tower snail .

Application examples

There is a wide range of application examples for knob-like shapes. From the late Neolithic and the Bronze Age (3500–1500 BC) Carved Stone Balls are known, conspicuously studded stone balls that were probably status symbols.

In the traditional production of glass there is the name nubs, which is closely related to linguistic history, for nub-like shapes .

When designing textiles, knobs have always been one of the central design elements. Many flat fabrics such as bouclé , salamines and tweed typically contain nubs, and often carpets and towels as well. This is not infrequently the case for practical reasons, in others knobs work as a pattern or decoration. With stopper socks for children, knobs are used to increase the slip resistance. However, especially with textiles, pimples can also be undesirable and can be removed as noils or with a pimple iron . When producing fulled wool from loden, pimpling is part of the work process and here means plucking the pimples out of a fabric.

Knobs are also used as part of locking devices such as control armbands or mushroom head Velcro .

In construction, studded panels are used as floor indicators in guidance systems for the blind , e.g. B. at bus stops. They can be felt with a long stick, but often also with the feet and are therefore suitable for warning. Concrete paving stones are partially provided with knobs to facilitate installation as spacers.

Knobs in the form of dimpled sheets (protective layer in house construction) or as an essential component of bubble wrap (part of packaging) serve as insulation .

Pimples appear in all varieties in sport, where they can be found, for example, on the surface of table tennis bats and on the surfaces of football and rugby balls and sometimes also hockey balls .

Last but not least, there is a wide range of applications in the field of health and hygiene, where knobs z. B. can be used for stimulation. You find yourself u. a. on nail mats , hedgehog and reaction balls on finger toothbrushes and condoms as well as on hairbrushes . There are also dryer balls in tumble dryers with knobs . In the standard fountain bottle , knobs should improve the slip resistance.

Knobs as a trademark

In some cases, pimples have even become the trademark of products. This applies, for example, to Lego blocks, but also to similar toys such as Modulex M20 , Tente , Pebe , Formo and Rasti . The sole profile with oversized knobs is an essential characteristic of shoes from the manufacturer Camper . The company nora systems is known for producing floor coverings with studs.
