Stahl was the son of a German father and a Dutch mother. After school in Aguadilla, he studied at the universities of Würzburg and Prague, where he graduated in 1864 with a doctorate in medicine. After returning to Puerto Rico, he opened a doctor's office in Bayamón. He spent his free time doing field research in the fields of ethnology, botany and zoology. Stahl was also very interested in history.

Between 1883 and 1888 Stahl published the six-part work Estudios sobre la Flora de Puerto Rico (A Study of Puerto Rican Flora), which lists 1,330 Puerto Rican plant taxa from various botanical gardens around the world. His studies formed the basis for numerous expert articles in which many new plant taxa were scientifically described for the first time.

Stahl was a staunch supporter of Puerto Rico's independence from Spain. He was a member of the autonomous party Partido Autonomista Puertorriqueño . The group tried to achieve a political and legal identity for Puerto Rico. In 1898 he was dismissed and deported from his professorship at the Instituto Civil de Segunda Enseñanza in San Juan because of his political views . After Puerto Rico gained sovereignty, he returned to the island.

Agustin Stahl died in Bayamón, where his remains were buried in the municipal cemetery. Stahl's house is now a museum. The Puerto Rican sculptor Tomás Batista created a bust in his honor, which can be seen in the University of Cayey .

this and that

After Stahl decorated a tree in his garden for Christmas 1866, the residents of Bayamón christened it "El Arbol de Navidad del Doctor Stahl" (Dr. Stahl's Christmas tree). Since then, the custom of decorating Christmas trees has also been in effect in Puerto Rico.
