Ahmad von Denffer (born May 10, 1949 in Mönchengladbach ) is a German publicist, translator and Muslim religious functionary. He comes from a German-Baltic family.

Life

From 1972 to 1978 he studied Islamic studies and ethnology at the University of Mainz . From 1978 to 1984 he was a research fellow at the Islamic Foundation in Leicester (England), which is closely related to the Islamist Pakistani Jamaat-e-Islami and the teachings of Maududi . It was directed by Khurram Murad , with whom von Denffer later wrote joint books. In 1984 he became a consultant for German-language affairs at the Islamic Center in Munich , headed by Mahdi Akef , who later became the supreme leader of the Muslim Brotherhood . Von Denffer is editor of the magazine "Al-Islam".

In 1984 he became a founding member of the International Islamic Charitable Foundation in Kuwait. 1986 to 1988 and from 1993 to 2011 he was chairman of “muslime hilft eV”, since 1995 trustee of “Muslim Aid International” in London. In 1989 von Denffer published a translation of Al-Qaradawi's book “Permitted and Forbidden in Islam” and in 1996 a German translation of the Koran and numerous other books. On June 4, 2005 he was elected to the Shura Council of the Islamic Center in Munich.

criticism

Von Denffer sees differences between Islamic law and the respective secular-local legal system and tries, if possible, to convert the German legal system into an Islamic one. For example, he criticized the Central Council of Muslims in Germany (ZMD), in which he himself represents the Islamic Center in Munich, for the “ Islamic Charter ” published in 2002 for its “clear opportunism”. There can be "no question" of the fact that Muslims in the diaspora are fundamentally obliged to adhere to the local legal system:

“Of course, everyone who lives in Germany recognizes the fact that they live here in a secular democracy as a reality. But that doesn't mean, as the ZMD claims here, that this fact and reality is recognized as being welcomed or even worth striving for. On the contrary, this insight is an incentive for Muslims to do their best to transform this society into an Islamic one. "

Likewise, in a contribution for the Islamic Community in Germany on the question of the compatibility of German law with Sharia law, he stated "an incompatibility in various areas" that "can hardly be resolved", especially in the "area of the role of women".

Von Denffer thinks that he could very well imagine an Islamic parallel society - which he would rather call a subculture - and cites Canada as a practical example and orientation, where there have been initiatives for the introduction of Islamic marriage and divorce law through mediation. "If the majority of the people in this society decide to [read: Sharia], then one should accept that and give them the opportunity to shape their society according to [the principles of Islamic law]".

Von Denffer considers the freedom of religious practice in the Islamic countries, in contrast to Germany, to be unrestricted. In response to al-Qaradawi's characterization of Palestinian “martyr operations” as “one of the most laudable forms of worship”, he commented “that every person must form his or her own opinion in this regard”.

With such views, von Denffer attracted the attention of the southern German constitutional protection authorities critically. The separation of state and religion , religious freedom and the principle of equality are called into question by him. Denffer also blames his contacts with sub-organizations of the Muslim Brotherhood .
