Ai Kawashima ( Japanese 川 嶋 あ い , bourgeois 川島 愛 , both read Kawashima Ai ; born February 21, 1986 in Fukuoka ) is a Japanese singer-songwriter , pianist and former singer of the pop duo I WiSH .

Musical career

Ai Kawashima began her music career in 1999 as an enka singer and was a street musician in Shibuya , but the success she had hoped for did not materialize. Together with Sugawara Naohiro, she founded the pop duo I WiSH in 2002 and became known through their first single, Asu e no Tobira . The duo reached number 6 in the Japanese annual charts and sold over 750,000 copies. After further publications the duo was dissolved in 2005 and Ai Kawashima began her solo career.

Her 6th single Zetsubou to Kibou was used as the theme song for the PlayStation 2 game Shining Force Neo and her 12th single Compass was the theme song of the 8th One Piece film Episode of Alabasta: The Desert Princess and the Pirates . In 2004, she sang the credits song Kimi no koe for the anime film The Place Promised In Our Early Days . In addition, their 15th single Door Crawl , released in late 2007, was also the theme tune for the Wii game Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon .

In September 2005 she published her autobiography Saigo no Kotoba , which landed on the bestseller lists and sold over 300,000 times. Ai Kawashima works with several aid organizations and opened two schools in Cambodia and Burkina Faso . The third school is being built in Liberia and a fourth is already being planned. In the spring of 2009 she performed at the Japanese National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC .
