List of domestic dogs

The Aïdi , also known as the Atlas Mountain Dog or Atlas Shepherd Dog , is a Moroccan breed of domestic dog . Besides the Sloughi, it is the only Moroccan dog breed recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 2, Section 2.2, Standard No. 247 ).

The sturdy and strong guard dog is used in the mountains and plateaus of the Atlas as a herd guardian dog . There he not only guards the herds, but also the camps of the wandering nomads. Its thick fur protects it against extreme weather conditions (hot days and icy nights) and also when fighting wolves . Together with the Sloughi, it is also used in hunting. He has the task of the poking dog and the Sloughi catches the fleeing small game.

In the case of the nomads of the Atlas Mountains, the breeding selection took place less according to external appearance, but according to the practical value of the individual dogs for daily work and the climatic conditions in the mountains. So it is not surprising that the thick, half-length fur comes in many different colors. With a height at the withers (shoulder size) of 50 to a little over 60 cm, it is slightly smaller than the shepherd dogs of the Caucasus . The half-hanging ears, so-called tilted ears, are relatively small and set on the sides and deeply on the broad and powerful head.
