Ayoûn el-Atroûs , also Aïoun el-Atrouss, Arabic عيون العتروس, is the capital of the administrative unit Hodh El Gharbi in the south of the West African state of Mauritania .

The market town on the edge of Felsbergen lies on the Route de l'Espoir , the only asphalt road to cross the country west-east, 215 kilometers east of Kiffa and 280 kilometers west of Timbédra . There are simple overnight accommodations.

The city's population increased continuously. In 1977 it was 8,528 and in 1988 it was 12,445 people, by 2000 it had fallen slightly to 11,867. In 2005 the city's population was estimated at 12,635. In 2005 it was on the list of the largest cities in Mauritania at position 32 and was the second largest city in Hodh El Gharbi after Tintane .
