Ajala Procaccia ( Hebrew אילה פרוקצ'יה; * 1941 in Kibbutz Ashdot Yaacov ) is an Israeli lawyer and former judge at the Supreme Court of Israel .

Life

After graduating from school, Procaccia served two years in the Israel Defense Forces and then studied at the Hebrew University of Israel . She completed her studies there with the academic degrees of a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and a Master of Laws (LL.M), each with distinction. She then worked in the legal profession and shortly thereafter became a legal assistant to the then President of the Supreme Court in Israel, Simon Agranat . In 1972 she received her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School . From 1972 to 1987 she worked in the Israeli Ministry of Justice.

In 1987 she was appointed a judge at the Jerusalem Magistrate Court. She became a judge at the Jerusalem District Court in 1993 and a judge at the Israeli Supreme Court in 2001, where she served until her retirement in 2011. At the Supreme Court she had influence on the case law on the relationship between human rights and the question of national security, on equal rights for women and on the relationship between state and religion. It also influenced the court's decision on the impact of international law on the erection of a security fence to seal off the West Bank .
