The Academic Rowing connection Westphalia is a color-bearing, voluntarily beating and pflichtrudernde student corporation . She was a founding member of the Academic Rowing Association . Founded in Münster in 1891 as an academic swimming and rowing club , the rector of the university confirmed it as a corporation in 1904.

history

On the initiative of the President of the Province of Westphalia and curator of the Royal Academy Heinrich Konrad von Studt , the Academic Swimming and Rowing Club in Münster was founded on June 23, 1891. On May 26, 1904, the constitution as a corporation was approved by the rector of the university. In the same year, ARV Westfalen was a founding member of the Academic Rowing Association. The final name, Academic Rowing Association "Westphalia", was introduced in 1926.

The first boathouse of the Academic Swimming and Rowing Club was on the Werse . In 1901, together with the Münster rowing club, they moved into a house that was previously used by workers who built the Dortmund-Ems Canal . In 1923, the Münster rowing club built its own boathouse, so that ARV Westphalia was the sole user of the house. However, this was finally destroyed by an aerial bomb in 1945 after two bombs had previously hit the boat hangars. All boats and many memorabilia were lost with the house. The rebuilding of a boathouse began as early as 1949 and was completed in 1958.

Color and motto

The rowers wear the colors light blue-white-dark blue with silver percussion. The models for this were the universities of Cambridge ( light blue ) and Oxford ( dark blue ) , which are known for academic rowing . Headgear is the occipital color in the same colors. The Fuxenband has the colors light blue and white. The motto of the ARV Westphalia is “Devoted to the fatherland, trusting the forces”. The circle shows both the letters ARV and vcf, which stands for vivat, crescat, floreat (Latin: "he (she, it) live, grow and bloom!").

Academic fencing

Until the end of the Second World War, the principle of unconditional satisfaction was the arming student's point of view. In defense of honor, games were fought on heavy sabers . After the Second World War, academic fencing was temporarily suspended. Since the late 1970s, racket games have been fought again. Today the academic rowing association is hitting voluntarily.

Rowing

Rowing took and continues to play a central role in ARV Westphalia. Even before the First World War, various regatta victories were won, including the silver medal in the Kaiservierer in 1895. In 1940, one of the greatest successes followed with winning the German war championship in the lightweight four-man with helmsman. Another sporting highlight came in 1972 when the connection at the Summer Olympics in Munich with Peter Funnekötter provided one of the rowers in the four-man without a helmsman . The team managed to win the bronze medal. In previous years he won the silver medal at the World Championships in St. Catherines in this boat in 1970 and the bronze medal at the European Championships in Copenhagen in 1971 . At German championships , however, other rowers from ARV Westphalia have repeatedly achieved successes (sometimes in racing communities ):

  • 1940 Lightweight - coxed four 1st place
  • 1967 in the lightweight eighth 1st place
  • 1968 1st place in the lightweight eighth
  • 1969 in two without a helmsman 2nd place
  • 1972 in two without a helmsman 3rd place
  • 1973 in a 2nd place
  • 1978 3rd place in the lightweight eighth
  • 1989 in eighth 3rd place
  • 1990 in eighth 2nd place

Even today, rowing is an integral part of federal life. ARV Westfalen regularly takes part in the German University Championships and in the Head of the River Race in London.
