The Turnerschaft Utonia (full name: Akademische Turnerschaft Utonia Zurich ; short form: Utonia ) is a student association of the University and ETH Zurich . The association was founded on February 21, 1873 as a student gymnastics club (STV). In the same year the club was renamed the University Gymnastics Club Zurich. The name Utonia goes back to an allusion to Zurich's local mountain, the Uetliberg , which is popularly referred to as Uto. Utonia Zurich, together with the Academic Gymnastics Association Rhenania Bern and the Academic Gymnastics Association Alemannia Basel, form the Swiss Academic Gymnastics Association (SAT). As a striking connection, it also belongs to the Swiss Arms Ring and the Zurich Ring. The members of the Utonia gymnastics club are called Utonen.
The motto of the Utonia gymnastics club is the same as for all SAT members: “ Mens sana in corpore sano ”. The connection is color-bearing, mandatory and, in addition to the principle of life covenant (so-called life connection), also avows unconditional satisfaction . The band of the members is colored white-blue, the cap is blue with a white passepoil and a white-blue advance and silver percussion.
Due to the principle of life covenant, membership in the Utonia gymnastics club does not end with the end of studies, but lasts for life. Simultaneous membership in another university association is only permitted to a limited extent. When changing the university, the central statutes of the SAT have made it mandatory for everyone to transfer to the SAT corporation of the new study location since 1899. The Utonia gymnastics association is a male association. After completing their studies, the members of the Utonia gymnastics club move from the active association (Aktivitas) to the old men’s association (AHV).
history
prehistory
In 1819, 300 years of the Reformation was celebrated in Zurich. The celebrations united students from Bern and Zurich. As a result of these encounters, among other things , a gymnastics society was founded in Zurich in addition to the Swiss Zofingerverein . This gymnastics society was finally able to merge into a club in 1824. Until 1847, the Zürcher Turngesellschaft consisted of both students and civic members, after which it was split up into the old section and the student gymnastics club .
The student gymnastics club of 1847 benefited from the large influx of students from abroad that the Federal Polytechnic School opened on October 15, 1855 ( ETH Zurich since 1911 ). The proportion of members who studied at the polytechnic increased rapidly, so that in 1859 the club was forced to change its name to student and polytechnic gymnastics club.
- “ In the winter semester of 1872/73 there were still 6 university students in the ranks of the gymnasts [...] They all joined the newly founded STV at the end of that semester. "

Structure, activities, alignment
construction
The Utonia Gymnastics Association is an association under Article 60 of the Swiss Civil Code. It is divided into Aktivitas (active members) and Altherrenverband (members after graduating). The Aktivitas is composed of Füxen (new members), active lads (regular members), inactive lads (lads in advanced studies) and external members (absent members). The old gentlemen's association is made up of old men , honorary members and holders of the Couleur loop.
activities
According to the statutes of the Utonia gymnastics club, it undertakes activities for the physical training of its members and weekly social events to cultivate friendship and traditional student customs.
Alignment
The Utonia gymnastics community is politically and denominationally neutral. It also accepts students from all disciplines.
Color
Cap
Blue flat cap with white passepoil and white-blue advance with silver percussion. Inactive boys (on the trunk) and old men are allowed to wear a so-called barrel . Occasionally old men wear other hat shapes, but in contrast to barrels, these hat shapes have no deeper meaning.
tape
The band of the Utones is white-blue with silver percussion. The boy and fox band are identical.
fencing
The Utonia is a mandatory alliance; d. H. it is one of the duties of its members to strike so-called determination mensuras. Since the summer semester (SS) 1901, the Utonians have carried out such determinations . As a result, the scale critique was introduced. In contrast to contraghens, determination mensuras are not based on a dispute between the timpani, but are agreed between them on a friendly basis. The Utonia only introduced unconditional satisfaction in 1910. Utonia is a founding member of the Swiss Armed Forces Ring (SWR). Accordingly, the members of the Utonia gymnastics club are committed to unconditional satisfaction until today .
